Acne

What is it?

Acne results from the excess production of oil, or sebum, by the sebaceous glands of the skin. As sebum accumulates within the hair follicle, it combines with skin flakes and other debris, leading to clogged pores (so-called “blackheads” or “whiteheads”). This environment promotes the growth of certain strains of bacteria, which create inflammation in the skin, appearing as superficial inflamed bumps and deeper cysts and nodules.

How do we treat it?

Treatment of acne, particularly when the skin is inflamed, is important in order to reduce the development of acne scars, which can have a lasting impact on a person’s physical appearance and can negatively affect a person emotionally and socially. Treatment of acne is not a “one size fits all” approach and varies among patients and skin types. Treatment may include topical or oral prescription medications, chemical peels, extractions or blue light therapy, as well as the use of a proper skin care regimen.
