What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing at Thomas Dermatology uses innovative laser technology to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars. Using targeted energy, your provider can remove layers or columns of skin to stimulate your body’s natural collagen and elastin production.

What are the different types of skin resurfacing treatments?

Some of the highly effective skin resurfacing treatments available at Thomas Dermatology include:

Fractional resurfacing

The Thomas Dermatology team offers fractional resurfacing technology with two types of fractional lasers. We offer the powerful fractional CO2 laser in addition to the impressive Sciton® ProFractional erbium laser. This allows our team to produce dramatic anti-aging results without the downtime of traditional deep resurfacing. Fractional resurfacing lasers remove columns of skin at a controlled depth and distance while leaving the surrounding skin intact. This in turn stimulates collagen production, reduces wrinkles, and improves skin tone and texture. Following your treatment, your skin will continue to improve for up to 6 months. Your provider will determine the correct laser for your skin type and tailor your treatment to your personal aesthetic goals.  

Deep resurfacing 

Thomas Dermatology specialists also offer deep skin resurfacing technology using Sciton’s Contour TRL™ laser. This option is the most effective treatment on deeper wrinkles, including those pesky lines around the lips and eyes. This laser removes layers of skin at a controlled depth resulting in a dramatic reduction in wrinkles to turn back the clock with only one treatment. However, a longer downtime is needed for these dramatic results. 

Micro Laser Peel

For those patients with mild wrinkles, brown spots, and sun damage, we offer the Micro Laser Peel. Using Sciton’s Contour TRL technology the Micro Laser Peel removes only the superficial layers of the skin to improve the pigmentation, tone, and texture of your skin. Downtime is minimal so that you may return to normal activities more quickly. Treatments can be done individually or as a package of 2-3 for optimal results. 

Picosure Focus Lens Array

At Thomas Dermatology we use Cynosure’s Picosure laser for our Focus Lens Array treatments. This is a picosecond laser that creates microscopic photomechanical reactions on the surface of the skin to increase collagen and elastin. This no-downtime procedure improves wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation. For best results, 4-6 treatments are recommended. 

Are resurfacing procedures painful?

Pain level typically depends on the treatment area and the intensity of your treatment. Pain tolerance is different for everyone, so your Thomas Dermatology provider will determine what type of anesthesia is right for you during your consultation.

What is the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers?

With the ablative approach, your provider uses controlled light beams with high intensity to remove the skin's upper layer also known as the epidermis. After removing the damaged, superficial skin, new skin is encouraged to grow, providing a softer, new layer of skin. Following your procedure, you may experience some redness, swelling, patchy areas, and light scabbing as your skin heals. These lasers typically provide more dramatic results with one treatment, but typically require a longer downtime.

Non-ablative lasers heat the targeted tissue to induce collagen and elastin production, but do not remove the top layers of the skin. They can provide very nice results, but typically require multiple treatments with less downtime. 

Will I need an ablative or non-ablative skin resurfacing procedure?

It will ultimately depend on your skin condition and cosmetic goals. Your Thomas Dermatology provider can also discuss your expectations and will guide you to select the best treatment for your specific needs.  

What can I expect after skin resurfacing?

Results will vary dramatically depending upon the aggressiveness of your procedure. If your treatment was ablative, your provider may prescribe a pain reliever after your skin resurfacing procedure. Additionally, you may need to clean the area daily and apply petroleum jelly or a gentle moisturizer depending upon the depth of your treatment.  

At first, because your provider treats the top layer of your skin, it will be red and start to crust. To avoid adverse results, you should follow your provider's aftercare instructions very closely. Keep in mind that it takes time for you to heal and for your body to produce new collagen and elastin. Best results are typically seen 3-6 months following your treatment.  

How many skin resurfacing treatments do I need?
