What causes spider veins?
Spider veins are a type of varicose veins, the twisted, enlarged veins that may be sore and tender to the touch.
Spider veins are thinner, lighter, and closer to the skin’s surface than varicose veins. Commonly found on the legs and face, spider veins are named for their spider web-like appearance.
Varicose and spider veins occur when irregular blood flow causes clogs that weaken the walls of the vein, causing it to expand. Some men and women don’t have any physical symptoms of spider veins. Others may experience:

- Swelling
- Throbbing

How does sclerotherapy treat spider veins?
Sclerotherapy is a type of cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of varicose and spider veins.
During sclerotherapy treatment, your Thomas Dermatology provider injects a solution directly into the vein. The solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to travel through other, healthier veins. The treated vein eventually collapses before being reabsorbed into the body.
To ensure sclerotherapy injections are the right treatment for you, your provider reviews your health history, including medications and any underlying blood vessel disease, before evaluating the spider veins you want to treat.
Your provider uses ultra-thin needles for a painless procedure that requires no anesthesia and has no scarring or downtime.
What kinds of results can I expect from sclerotherapy treatment?
Immediately after sclerotherapy injections, you’ll be able to get up and move around. In fact, movement encourages the clotting process to help treated veins scar and dissolve.
Just remember to avoid especially strenuous activity for at least two weeks after treatment. Compression stockings or bandages are recommended to maintain good pressure on the treated areas.
